What is DIN?

DIN is a unique Director Identification number allotted by the Central Government to a business entity who wants to be a Director or is an existing director of a company. DIN is an 8-digit unique identification number which is valid for a lifetime. Director Identification Number helps in maintaining details of the directors in a database. A DIN is allocated to a person which states that even if a person is a director in more than two companies, they have to obtain only a single Director Identification Number and if case they quit that company and joins a different company the same DIN would be eligible in the other company as well. An application or any information related to a company will be submitted under any law, the director signing such return, application or information has to mention DIN underneath their signature.

What is the process to apply for DIN?

  • To apply for DIN, the above forms are to be filed electronically. It has to be digitally signed and then uploaded on the online portal.
  • One needs to attach the Identity Address proof for DIN. The DIN would be allocated to an applicant once they are approved by the concerned authority.
  • Attachments for photographs, Identity proof, Residence proof, Verification (Name, father’s name, present address, date of birth, the text of declaration and physical signature of the applicant is needed for the process.
  • According to the act, once a person is appointed as a director in any company as per the Companies Act 2013, he cannot relinquish his DIN in the future. The DIN number will be associated with him/her for a lifetime
